A European vacation is one of the most dreamt-of and most sought-after vacation packages for Filipinos today. And with travel getting more affordable these days, it is no wonder that most Filipinos have started to include Europe in their travel plans. A basic European vacation package will include Rome, Venice, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Paris, locations that are adjacent to each other. Following are the amazing sights that one can see:
A visit to Rome should include such landmarks as:
The Roman Forum is one of the most important archeological sites in the world. It is situated near the Colosseum and was the site of markets and social activities at the end of the 7th century. This is where people would go to attend trials and orations and to meet to discuss politics and the races which the Romans really enjoyed. It was truly the center of city life during those days.
The Colosseum is an ampitheater which was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty in AD 70-72. This massive structure measuring 620 ft x 513 feet, was built by Vespasian as a gift to the Roman people. The arena was used for combats between gladiators and for wild animal fights. Today the Colosseum, though structurally ruined, still remains a very popular tourist destination.
Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. Designed by Nicola Salvi in 1732 the fountain features the figures of Neptun flanked by 2 Tritons. A long time tradition is to throw a coin into the water to guarantee return to Rome.
Spanish Steps or Piazza de Spagna is the widest stairway in Europe, and was one of the most popular tourist attractions during the Renaissance period. This was built in the 18th century and featured stairs and ramps that intersect and open out like a fan. It effectively connected the square with the church above (Trinita Church) and is frequented and loved by tourists from around the world.
Vatican Museum houses painting and sculpture masterpieces that have been collected by different popes throughout the centuries. This is where the famous Sistine Chapel, one of the greatest works of art, is located.
St Peter’s Basilica stands on the site where Peter the Apostle, the first Pope and the “rock” on which the Church would be built, was crucified and buried. He is buried under the main altar of the basilica. Inside St. Peter’s you would find several Renaissance and Baroque art masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s Pieta. At the approach to the basilica is the St. Peter’s Square which features two fountains at the north and south side, and a 25.5-meter-tall obelisk, which dates from 13th-century-BC Egypt.
The Venice/Austria/Switzerland/Amsterdam leg of the tour would normally include:
St Mark’s Square or Piazza San Marco is a square built in front of the St Mark’s Basilica and has been the site of important government buildings and other buildings essential to the activities in Venice. The square is also known for being full of pigeons.
Leaning Tower of Pisa’s construction began in 1173 and was completed only around the 1300s due to several interruptions brought about by wars, lack of funds and the time it took engineers to solve the “lean”. It was built to serve as a church bell tower to the Cathedral of Pisa. It leans because of its soft ground foundation. Experts have established that the tower is not just leaning but actually falling at the rate of one to two millimeters per year. Today it is around 5 meters off perpendicular.
Bridge of Sighs was built to connect the old prison house interrogation rooms to the new prison locate across the river and is one of the best bridge architectures in the world. Legend has it that if a couple aboard a gondola kisses while the gondola passes under the bridge the couple would experience eternal love. The whole romantic scenario would elicit sighs from the couple, thus the name.
Swiss Alps are located south of Bern and east of Geneva Lake and offer some of the most stunning sceneries of high peaks and serene lakes.
