The Grand Place. On the way to Paris is this city square of Brussels, Belgium which was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Used as an execution site in the 14th to th 17th centuries where witches and Protestants were burned at the stake, The Grand Place has changed its image into the bright center of Brussels. The Grand Place is surrounded by beautiful buildings and guildhalls, making it one of Europe’s most visited tourist spots.
Mannekin Pis or The Pissing Boy is one of Brussels most popular sites. The statue depicts a boy urinating into the fountain. With a wardrobe of over 900 suits, the statue symbolizes Brussels rebellious spirit and has in recent times become an anti-terrorism icon.
The Atomium is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the whole of Europe. Located in Brussels, this monument was created for the 1958 World Fair of Brussels by architect Andre Waterkeyn. It symbolized “the democratic will to maintain peace among all the nations, faith in progress, both technical and scientific and, finally, an optimistic vision of the future of a modern, new, super-technological world for a better life for mankind” (Source: Atomium website).
Louvre Museum. Originally built as a fortress by King Philip II in the 12th century, several expansions spanning several centuries has given the structure its palatial appearance today. It is now one of the largest and most important museums in the world. The museum presently has a collection of more than 1 million artworks, of which 35,000 are on display in over three wings of the structure.
Champs Elysee or “Elysian Fields” is the most famous avenue in the world and is one of the obligatory stops for tourists. Used by Parisians as the site for major events including New Year’s eve celebrations. Two kilometers long and seventy meters wide the Champs Elysee stretches from the Place dee la Concorde to the Place Charles de Gaulle where the Arc de Triomphe is located.
Arc de Triomphe. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 as a monument to his victories, the Arc de Triomphe is one of greatest arches in history. The arch is engraved with the names of generals who commanded French troops during the regime of Napoleon and is adorned with many reliefs commemorating Napoleon’s battles.
Eiffel Tower. No traveler goes to Paris without visiting the Eiffel Tower. Three hundred meters tall and weighing 10,100 tons, the tower was originally built for the World Exhibition in 1889 in celebration of the French Revolution in 1789. Visited by more than 7 million people a year, the Eiffel Tower today is still home to more than 120 radio and television antennas and has three platforms containing two restaurants, a banquet hall a champagne bar and several gift shops.
